Free Motion Quilting – Feather Fan from I Patch and Quilt

Do you want feathers on your quilt, but they have to be a bit whimsical and modern? I have a great design option for you!

This edge to edge freemotion design lets you indulge in single feather shapes and curve them to the left or to the right. The design can be used on a quilt with a theme like: birds, water, waterfall, splashes, flowers, plants, leaves and the jungle.

Pattern Tutorial

The Feather Fan design is based on a series of single feather shapes placed next to each other, like the feather crest on a cockatoo’s head or ...

Free Motion Quilting – Comtesse from I Patch and Quilt

Fall weather has made its entrance and I have already grabbed my enormous fleece hoody to cocoon in in the evenings. I have started work on a Halloween quilt project which I will share in a separate blog post later this month and have taken the cinnamon tea out of the storage cupboard. Here comes sweater weather!

The Comtesse edge to edge design is airy and soft, like leaves falling off the trees in a gentle Autumn breeze. The word comtesse is French for countess, a female of a certain rank in nobility. The Comtesse design reminds me of gentle ...

Free Motion Quilting – Caterpillar from I Patch and Quilt

Do you see many butterflies were you live? Many of us make a conscious decision to have an insect-friendly garden, but do we all welcome caterpillars who munch on the plants? Last year I discovered these stunning caterpillars in my front garden on the verbascum plants. These caterpillars are way more colorful than the adults sadly. They turn onto a chunky and hairy brown Mullein moth.

In this free motion Caterpillar edge to edge design, small caterpillars are placed in all directions. The design is based on a short sequence of movements that are echoed to move to a new ...

FMQ Feather Flower from I Patch and Quilt

Are you looking for an elegant free motion edge to edge design for your quilt project? Try Feather Flower!

The gorgeous Feather flower design moves in every direction and starts with a shape that you may have tried before: the feather with a pearl. I used this shape a couple of weeks ago in ‘Bubble Wave’.

After the feather with pearl, you stitch two more feathers and add a final leaf shape that can fill any area that needs to be filled. The leaf can go on either side of your stitched ‘branch’.

It looks really well on this red ...

Last Mini Wholecloth Finished - To Do Tuesday 13/12/22 from The Quilt Yarn

Well, I lost the plot again for a few weeks in terms of my weekly goals, however did manage to finish at least one thing from my list a few weeks ago.

Finished the last of the little wholecloth quilts for a workshop next year.

Have three examples of the same design now and plenty to talk about. The last one, the yellow wholecloth was a bit of an exploration of thread. I used Magnifico 40/3 wt thread from Superior for that for the main elements and 100 wt Invisafil for the background.

It looks lovely in that gold ...

Feather Online Course with Bethanne Nemesh from The Quilt Yarn

The online course with Bethanne Nemesh has started. Had our first session and it was fabulous...very organised, structured and very intense. My head was somewhat spinning afterwards and I was thinking ...OMG, this is just the first lesson! The level of detail was outstanding and it was helpful for the beginner and more advanced quilter alike. Absolutely loved the detailed explanations, hints and tricks to improve my feathering. I did not watch the live session as that would have meant getting up in the middle of the night and to my delight when I watched in on FB the ...

Excited Plus! from The Quilt Yarn

I am getting a bit excited over here. I have enrolled in Bethanne Nemesh' online Freehand Feather Fiesta class which will start on 6th of November.

I have done one of Bethanne's classes in person some years ago - Feather Faster and completed this wall hanging after the class. The class was a drawing class and the wall hanging was suggested as a follow up. Still hanging proudly in our family room.
Apart from this I stitched out a sample of the various feathers she talked about...

...and that was it! From then on I continued on my familiar way ...

Amy's Scrappy Homerun from Night Owl Quilting

This is Amy's latest scrappy quilt.  When I asked the pattern name, she said that she made blocks based on a demo from her local quilt guild, and used a layout idea from the Alternate Routes pattern she just finished and came up with this.  I think she hit this one out of the park!

This quilt was just a scrappy stash buster, but it was calling out for something other than a panto.  I asked Amy if I could play, and she said to go for it.  I came up with a plan that didn't involve any ...

Broken Star from Night Owl Quilting

This beautiful Broken Star quilt belongs to Gay.  It is very special to her as the top was made by her dear friend Ann who recently passed away.  I was honored to be asked to help make this treasure into a finished quilt.

Gay knew that she did not want dense quilting, as she wanted the quilt to have a nice drape when it was done.  She also knew that she wasn't fond of the continuous curve design that is often quilted on the coloured diamonds.  So the design plan became feathers, feathers and more feathers (but nice open ...

Pretty Irish Chain with Applique from Night Owl Quilting

When Lori sent a photo of this quilt top asking for custom quilting (and especially feathers), I couldn't wait for it to get to the top of my list!

The recipient of this quilt loves feathers and more traditional quilting, so feathers wreaths were the request for the open white spaces.

I added continuous curves in the chain section, and because of the white in all the prints, I was able to use white thread for all the quilting.

The pretty flower details in the border were all hand appliqued.  I stitched around the applique and added a simple ...

Glorious and Free from Night Owl Quilting

I was very lucky to get the opportunity to have some free motion fun on this fabulous quilt made by Gail.  The pattern is Glorious and Free by Quilter on Fire.  Gail adapted the pattern slightly to make it fit her size requirements.

I knew the maple leaf needed to be the star of the show so I used a curls for the veins.

The remaining red section got a complimentary curling design, and the blue background got a wood grain design.  Horizontal "wind" fill in the white and to top it all off a nice leafy feather in the ...

Cookie Cutter from Night Owl Quilting

I recently had the pleasure of quilting this gorgeous quilt for Leslie at Keystone Modern Creative.  The pattern is called Cookie Cutter by Jaybird Quilts and the fabric is Pedal Pusher by Camelot fabrics.  This quilt has such a different feel than the original cover design that features a white background with rainbow colours.

Leslie let me pick the quilting design, but I did check to make sure she was okay with feathers!

I used a bead board design on the outer border to frame the quilt.

The coloured diamond got continuous curves and a twirling feather motif filled the ...

Help Me Name that Pantograph Quilting Design from AndiCrafts

I’ve been having so much fun lately designing new quilting designs! I love playing with different ideas and seeing what I can create. Usually I start by designing an overall or pantograph quilting design. (If you don’t know what that is, I talk about pantographs here.) Next I take one of the repeats and try […]
